How many letters are in the Uzbek alphabet?

The reformed 2026 Uzbek Latin alphabet has 28 letters, plus the tutuq belgisi (ʼ), which is a sign rather than a letter. The 1995 alphabet had 26 letters and 3 digraphs (sh, ch, ng); the reform turned sh, ch, gʻ and oʻ into the single letters ş, ç, ğ and ö, and ng stopped counting as a separate letter.

When was the Latin alphabet adopted?

In 1993: Law No. 931-XII of 2 September 1993 introduced the Uzbek alphabet based on the Latin script. Law No. 71-I of 6 May 1995 revised it to 26 letters and 3 letter combinations. The 2026 reform, Law OʻRQ-1184, sets 28 letters and the tutuq; it takes effect on 22 April 2027.

What was the old Latin alphabet?

The 1995 alphabet: 26 letters including Oʻ and Gʻ, the letter combinations Sh, Ch and Ng, and the tutuq. The 2026 reform turns Oʻ, Gʻ, Sh and Ch into Ö, Ğ, Ş and Ç, and ng no longer counts as a separate letter.

How do I type Ö on a phone?

Add the Turkish keyboard (iOS: Settings → General → Keyboard; Android: Gboard → Languages): it has Ö, Ğ, Ş and Ç, and long-pressing o, g, s or c shows them too. Turn off autocorrect while you write Uzbek, and watch the i: the key where it usually sits types a dotless ı, and the dotted i is right of ş.

Tutuq belgisi (ʼ)

The apostrophe sign — separates vowels and marks a glottal stop. It is not one of the 28 letters.

In loanwords, Cyrillic ц is written s; Alfavit marks c as an alternative so you can choose.
